CoC at Hotel Resilients

We are happy to announce that CoC is present at the Hotel Resilients project at Le Berger Hotel in Brussels. We hope to see you here!

We have set up the shape of the Subak and have a broad collection of bits and pieces from the trips. We are surprised how little space we actually had in the vessel, for 11 days of travel on the Danube and Belgian canals. The memories present in some of the recorded interviews have reminded us of what strange and wonderful journeys they were. It is probably time to plan the next round of CoC journeys!

Carbon Impact

As part of the CoC project, we were asked to use the tools at Julies Bicycle to calculate our CO2 load. Almost a year after the event, we have finally done this. I am not sure if it is shocking or wonderful.

The results:

Murray river: includes two flights to Australia, Greer and Pix coming by bus, Scout and Nick visiting by car as wel as the delivery and pickups: 3.1 tonnes of CO2
Danube river: includes 2 flights back from Australia, pickups and transport of the Subak: 2.8 Tonnes
Belgian canals: included driving to deliver as well as 4 train trips for Michka and Marthe: 508 kg

Summary: Flying is the worst thing we can do. I wonder what the carbon load of riding on a cargo ship is?

Subak goes on stage

After Burning Ice, we left Subak in the hands of Cathy Weyders who was looking after the staging for Manah Depauw’s show Wallifornie. Well, it is time for the premier and it looks like they have treated Subak well!

The Subak looks lovely in her new colours. The crew are looking less well.

We wish the cast and crew all the best for the premier tomorrow and hope that we will get a chance to see the production.

Man on the River is nearing Istanbul

Giacomo, a hardly Italian man, came past Linz last year as he rowed and sailed from London towards Istanbul. Tomorrow (Sept 27th 2012) he will arrive in Istanbul.

“Giacomo has entered the Bosphorus. Thursday, September 27th 2012, at 11:00 am, Koç Museum, Haliç-Golden Horn, Istanbul, He will complete his journey from London to Istanbul.”

If anyone reading this is there, it would be great wave a flag to welcome him. Read about his journey and imagine a simpler life.

At least we know she’s watertight

Arriving back in Linz we adjusted the cover on the future Spoon to deal with the rain. Now that the rain has stopped I took off the cover. To discover that the hull is, at least, watertight.

The canopy was not watertight, so slowly the vessel has filled. If it can’t get out, then at least we know it can’t get in.

At least we have a great submergible pump to empty it.

Packing Up

As the exhibition at Burning Ice comes to a close, we have to close up too. Our initial plan to set the Subak free as a commons vessel has foundered. The intention to have some small vessels in the commons, boats that were used by someone, than left at a certain place to be picked up and used for further journeying by a next person, like the wonderful Bookcrossing system for letting books re-enter the commons, has turned out to suffer from legalistic issues somewhat similar to the White Bicycles of Amsterdam/.

Thus we initiated our idea auction and the best bid so far has come in from a theatre group. They will use the vessel to stage a piece of theatre about rising sea levels forcing the inhabitants of Flanders, the formerly poor, now rich but low-lying part of Belgium, to move to the formally rich, now massively underemployed and poor part of Belgium called Wallonia. This seems to us to be the best possible use of the Subak, so the idea auction has been clearly won unless someone comes up with an even more outrageously good idea by 8pm tonight!

We will be packing up the vessel Sunday morning, so it will look a bit like the images on this flicker set. Driving 5.4 meters of steel boat in parts on a trailer around a tight city like Brussels is difficult, even more so when you have smashed your back window with the bow of the main hull on your way there. From then we only have to deal with the other remnants, life jackets, borrowed motor and suchlike. We will be homeward bound and ready for new projects – and trying to continue documenting this phase too.

It will be somehow sad to say goodbye to the Subak after almost a year’s worth of experiments and experiences, but we are sure that the theatre project will be wonderful and look forward to hearing about the experiences in other ways and places.

Last nights at Kaaitheatre

The Subak on display at Burning Ice #5 above the canals near Kaaitheater in Brussels. Come and learn about the vessel, the journey, the ideas and the people we met.

Tonight (Friday) and tomorrow we will be at the Kaaitheater here in Brussels talking with people about Control of the Commons. We will raise sail around 5pm and be waiting around until about 7pm, longer if someone supplies enough rum, shorter if the weather is nasty. You might want to join us at the FoAM BYO Apero until 8pm for further discussions.

On Saturday after spending some time with the boat (5pm-7pm as usual), discussing possibilities for future uses of it, we will be talking at the Resilients Salon at Burning Ice about our Non Green Gardening activities (our Gardener in Residence, Natalia Borissova, is unfortunately ill), resilient culture and various other areas of interest.

At the Kaaistudios we have a collection of images from the journeys printed onto a calico display, the Australian Subak2 sail and a sound installation of atmospherics and interviews playing. This runs from 5:30 pm through the night while shows are on at the Studios, until Saturday.

Subak at Burning Ice Festival, Brussels

After travelling for just over a week from the French border through miraculous, sunny Belgian weather (and only one severe rainstorm), Subak and her crew have arrived in Brussels. We’re now ~~camping~~ in residence at FoAM Brussels preparing the Subak and assorted project documentation to appear in the Burning Ice Festival.

Subak will be on display by the canal near Kaai Theatre from the 5th of June through to June 10th. Members of the project will be on hand most days between 17.00 and 19.00 to answer questions about the project.

Popular questions include: Where do you sleep? What’s the solution to water management issues? Why aren’t you using the motor? Come visit us to find out the answers!

Time’s Up will also be discussing their project and their contribution to Crosstalk‘s Bridges Over Troubled Water essay collection from 19.00 on Thursday June 7th at Kaai Studio, Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Vaakstraat 81, 1000 Brussels
