It is good to see some old projects come to fruition.
After 5 years of being stored, the tree raft, initially designed to support a willow as a floating tree island, has been floated.
The original plan included a cubic meter of soil mounted in the center for the willow to grow in. Willows can happily have submerged soil, so this would not be an issue for it. But with the wind loads, the 2.1 tonne of soil and other loads, the original plan had another ten 250 liter drums mounted underneath the platform for reserve buoyancy. For the Floating Village 2014 we have left these out, as so much weight will not be on the raft.
